The Cascade Stereoscopic Club Mailing List

Basic overview

It's on Yahoo

The club has an open and public mailing list that is hosted on Yahoo called "Cascade-SC".

People on this mailing list are primarily CSC members local to the metro Portland, Oregon area -- but also includes members outside of the area as well as non-members who are just interested in joining our discussions. All those interested are invited to join the mailing list.

The primary purpose of the mailing list is to provide a means for members of the club to exchange information with others in the club in a timely fashion. This would include things like photographic opportunities available locally, things related to club activities, plus the occasional announcement. Most postings will be about 3D related subjects that club members are involved with or potential members asking questions about some aspect of 3D photography and getting an assortment of replies. Plus of course, the occasional private email that was sent to the group in error and the followup apologies. It is a friendly mailing list that currently has approximately 200 members.

Mailing List Rules

Just be nice

The mailing list rules basically just require one to be nice, don't operate a selling business on the mailing list and don't spam.

New members to the mailing list are initially moderated, then usually soon thereafter moderation is removed. If initial posting(s) are SPAM those postings will not make it to the group and the member will be permanently banned.

Here are the basic rules for the mailing list:

  • Try to keep to topics that are at least vaguely relevant to 3D or club activities. Does not have to be club-related or directly 3D. Talking about film or printers are, for instance, perfectly fine if not taken to excess because they are used for 3D activities even if not uniquely so. Short off topic side-trips are tolerated so long as they stay short.
  • When posting followup email, quote the email you're responding to as little as practical. Assume that the email you're responding to has been read by others. Those in digest mode will appreciate this tremendously. In other words, no single-line responses followed by three pages of quoted material.
  • Attachments are not allowed on the mailing list's postings. To send files to the group as a whole, upload the file or photo to the group's resources on Yahoo (files go here and photos go here) then post an announcement about it (including a link to it would be nice). List members subscribing the "quick easy way" don't have access to these resources.
  • For-sale postings are acceptable, but only for 3D or related items, and only one-time sorts of personal sales. In other words no professional sellers posting for-sale ads. A commercial seller may post informational links to their site if it's within the context of a subject being discussed (falls within the next point below).
  • If you know about something for sale commercially that you would like to let others know about, don't post an ad for it. Assuming it's something specifically suitable for the group the information posted should be in the form of a link directly to the item(s) being sold. A sentence or two in your own words explaining what it is should be included. Do not paste commercial information into your posting. The posting should not be an ad for the item, but only an informational link to it. An example might be a link to a 3D field-sequential video that's being sold. Link should be to the video itself, not to the base URL of the seller's website that a person has to look through to find it (becoming an ad for that site).
  • If there's a problem concerning the mailing list, don't post complaints about it to everyone via the list, send email to the list's moderator (also "me"), I'm the only one with the ability to do anything about it.
